Partial COD Prepayment

Customer pays a slice online, the rest at the door — fake COD orders disappear.

Partial COD asks the customer to prepay a portion of the order online — a percentage or a fixed amount you choose — and pay the balance in cash on delivery. That small online commitment filters out fake orders and slashes costly returns-to-origin.

How it works

What you actually do, step by step — most owners finish this from a phone.

1

Enable and set the slice

Choose a percentage of the order or a fixed ₹ amount as the online prepayment. Partial COD replaces plain COD at checkout when it's on.

2

Customer pays the slice online

Checkout shows the exact split — 'Pay ₹X now, ₹Y on delivery' — and the customer pays the online part through any of your enabled gateways.

3

Courier collects the balance

The order records exactly what's left to collect; ship through a connected courier and that balance is passed to them automatically.

4

Close the loop

When the cash comes in, one tap on 'Mark COD collected' completes the order's payment record.

Why it matters for your business

Junk orders vanish

Someone willing to pay even a small amount online is a real buyer — pranksters and fence-sitters drop off before they cost you a shipment.

RTO losses shrink

Return-to-origin on a refused COD parcel costs you two-way shipping; prepaid customers rarely refuse delivery.

COD comfort stays

Customers who don't fully trust online payment still get to pay most of the amount in cash at the door.

Money math you can trust

The split is computed server-side on the full order total — including GST and shipping — so the gateway charge and the courier's collectible always add up exactly.

What's included

The honest, complete list — limits stated where they exist.

  • Prepayment as a percentage of the order or a fixed ₹ amount
  • The exact 'pay now / pay on delivery' split is shown before the customer confirms
  • Balance-to-collect flows automatically to Shiprocket, Shipmozo, Delhivery, or NimbusPost when you ship
  • If a parcel is refused and returns, only the online slice is refundable — your books stay correct
  • Optional COD fee on top for owners with real cash-handling costs (off by default)
  • 'Mark COD collected' on the order completes the payment lifecycle
  • Works with all six gateways; the customer picks their gateway for the online slice

Common questions

What prepayment should I set?
Most owners start around 10–25% — enough commitment to filter fakes without scaring genuine COD buyers. For heavy or high-value items where RTO hurts more, set a higher slice or a fixed amount that covers your two-way shipping cost.
What happens if the customer refuses delivery?
You keep clean records: the online slice is what's refundable (per your own refund policy), the COD balance was simply never collected, and the order reflects both. Many owners set the slice to at least their shipping cost so a refusal never puts them out of pocket.
Can I run Partial COD and normal COD together?
Partial COD replaces plain COD at checkout while it's enabled — that's the point: every 'cash' order now carries a real commitment.
